Is it Time to Say Farewell?
I'm starting to think that it might be time to say goodbye to my favourite shoes.
They are a little worse for wear, but still oh-so-comfy, and I just can't bear to let them go.
You see, I got them about 10 years ago, in a shop in the Thomas Neal's Centre, in Covent Garden. I don't remember the name of the shop, but it's the big one downstairs, to the left of Starbucks (or where Starbucks used to be), if you come in from the main entrance as opposed to the little flight of stairs at the back. Anyway. I had seen on TV someone from The Dandy Warhols (at least, that's what my head tells me now. It could have been anyone), wearing these shoes, and I just fell in love with them. I never thought I'd find them, but there, buried in Covent Garden, I did. Trouble was, I worked at Starbucks, owed money, was too orientated on going out and having fun, and the shoes were £90. A LOT of money for a pair of Converse. But these Converse....oh! I'd never seen anything like them. I went away, and thought about them for weeks. Eventually I took this as a sign, and went back. I was lucky enough to get the last pair, which just happened to be my size. The girl went round the back to get the box, but when she came back she told me that the correct box was gone, so she'd put them in another box, but I must be sure to tell the kid at the till. I said that I would, but when the barcode was scanned and I was asked for £40 instead of £90, I admit......I said nuffin. Bargain!
I have worn them on far too many occasions to count. If these shoes could talk, they would know far more about me than many people. They know me inside and out (they've even had some of my insides on their outsides). They stuck with me through the most important years of my life, and have, in some weird way, become something that I can rely on, a huge constant of my growing-up years, and to be honest, I don't think I'll ever throw them away.
I want new ones, but can't find them ANYWHERE. If anyone happens upon this post, and knows where you can find these shoes, please do tell me. I'll be forever grateful!
Here is a picture.

No laces, you see. And unlike the similar version you can get today, the flaps where the laces should be, are not fastened down to the tongue, but are loose, and just attached with elastic. I've only had the elastic replaced once, and that was only because someone stepped on the back of my shoe while I was walking.
As you can probably tell, I'm really attached to these shoes. It's slightly odd, yes, but that's just life sometimes.
